What are Essential Oils and Why We Use Them?

When coming home after a long day, unwinding is the first thing on your mind. What better way to do that than with a natural method which has worked for centuries? Aromatherapy has been a part of our history for well over 3,500 years. It is proclaimed to enhance your state of mind and help to alleviate stress.

Using essential oils is the most popular form of aromatherapy. Essential oils are collected from components that are derived from plants by methods of distillation, or cold press. Since they are made from the aromatic essence of plants, the oils encapsulate the fragrance from the herbs. Each distinctive compound extracted grants each essential oil its custom aroma. They are extracted to be used for external use when diluting with carrier oils or aromatherapeutic methods, such as diffusers. Essentially, these oils have a beneficial impact and a remarkable ability to positively affect one’s well-being.

Distillation Method: How It Works

Many of our essential oils, those of which include Lavender, Oregano, Peppermint, and Tea Tree oils are extracted through steam distillation. This specific type of extraction dates all the way back to the 10th century. The process begins by placing the proper proportion of freshly harvested or dried plants inside an alembic chamber. There is a proportionate amount of water that is then boiled. As the water boils, steam enters the chamber which contains the plants, further vaporizing the molecules and releasing the essential oil. The steam and the oil are then transferred through a cooling tube, which shifts it into a liquid that is collected in another vessel. Due to varying densities, the oil separates from the water and stays afloat as the hydrosol, the recondensed water, stays at the bottom. The essential oil is then able to be distributed.

Cold-Pressed Method: How It Works

Another common method of processing is cold-pressing, which is used for our Brazilian Orange, Bergamot and Lemon essential oils. Cold-pressing helps preserve the potency and effectiveness of essential oils. Certain plants whose molecules undergo high levels of heat can oftentimes minimize the oil’s health benefits.

This is why this heatless chemical-free process is ideal for extracting oils from many fruits and plants. But how does it work? The extraction method simply involves placing plants and/or fruit peels through a grated cylinder which slowly punctures them. After that, the peels and plants are sprayed with water and a centrifugal force then begins to separate the oil from the plant’s pulp and liquid. This puncturing and spinning process releases the essential oils from the plant or peels into their purest form.

Aromatherapy

Robert Tisserand once said, “Aromatherapy is a caring, hands on therapy which seeks to induce relaxation, to increase energy, to reduce the effects of stress and to restore lost balance to mind, body, and soul.” Aromatherapy is a great healing treatment that uses natural plant extracts to promote healthy self care habits. Aromatherapy uses aromatic essential oils to boost the health of the body, mind, and spirit. It enhances both mental and emotional health.

Using Essential Oils in a Diffuser

A diffuser is an appliance that plugs into the wall and dispenses your chosen fragrance into the room. The diffuser is first filled with filtered water, then add several drops of essential oils, before turning it on. A mist of water infused with the essential oil fragrance is emitted into your room’s atmosphere. Though the process sounds very technical, essential oil diffusers are very holistic and therapeutic. The sound of the mist entering the atmosphere is very pleasing in and of itself. Many diffusers also emit a light when on, which increases a therapeutic, relaxing environment. The scent that you choose to use in your diffuser will have its own unique effects, too. Some that are considered our fan favorites are listed below. Essentially, the diffuser is an easy and fast way to incorporate essential oils into your busy daily living routine when you have little time for yourself.
