Carrier Oils are derived from a vegetable’s seeds, kernels, or nuts and are commonly used to dilute essential oils. Directly applying essential oils onto the skin can oftentimes cause unwanted irritation due to their strength. They need to be diluted with carrier oils to soften their potency. While essential oils are rich in vitamins and antioxidants, diluting essential oils does not diminish their benefits. Rather, it improves how much of the oil your skin absorbs as it reduces evaporation, and quite literally, “carries” the essential oils into your skin.
Cold-Pressed Method: How It Works
A common method of processing carrier oils is cold-pressing, which is used for our Argan, Sweet Almond, Rosehip, Avocado, Castor, Apricot, and Hemp-Seed carrier oils. Certain plants whose molecules undergo high levels of heat may minimize the oil’s health benefits. That is why this heatless chemical-free process is ideal for extracting oils from many fruits and plants. But how does it work? The extraction method simply involves placing seeds, nuts, or kernels through a grated cylinder which slowly punctures them. After that, they are sprayed with water and a centrifugal force then begins to separate the oil from the seeds. This puncturing and spinning process releases the oils into their purest form.

Expeller-Pressed Method: How It Works
Another common method of processing is expeller-pressing which is used for our Chilean Grape-Seed carrier oil. Expeller-pressing uses friction to squeeze the oil out of the seed rather than using chemicals. While this method does not include additional heat, the friction often causes temperatures to rise above what would be considered “cold-pressed”, and that is how these two methods differ. After the oil is extracted, it is ready to be bottled up and used.

Fractionation Method: How It Works
The fractionation method is used for our Fractionated Coconut carrier oil. This method of processing is used to separate different types of fats found in certain oils, via heat. The fractionation process is carried out by heating the oil above its melting point. After this is done, it is left to cool, leaving the solid fraction of the oil separated from the liquid.

Why Do We Use Them?
As we mentioned before, one way carrier oils are used is to dilute essential oils in order for them to work effectively when applied directly onto the skin. But they can also be used on their own. Each carrier oil has different benefits and can be incorporated into your skin or hair care routine. The best carrier oils for skin are Jojoba, Grapeseed, Rosehip. While the most beneficial for hair are Coconut, Argan, Almond, and Avocado Oils.
