Historical Origin

Eucalyptus oil is a versatile essential oil that has been used for several medicinal, health, and wellness purposes for centuries. This essential oil is derived from the fast-growing Eucalyptus tree. Most of the Eucalyptus tree species are native to Australia. The first known documented distillation had occurred in the 18th century. In 1788, Surgeon-General John White, on the First Fleet, had distilled a small amount of oil from it's piperita species.  He also had sent it to England to test its capability. When it was tested in England, it was reported to be more effective than England’s peppermint oil. Surgeon White named this species as Sydney's peppermint because it shared a close resemblance to Mentha piperita. However, Eucalyptus oil had not been exploited commercially until the 19th century.

Later in the 1850s, Victorian botanist, Baron Mueller, had promoted it's qualities as a disinfectant. He also had encouraged researches on its potential for commercial use. In the same era, European hospitals had begun using it for sanitary purposes during surgeries and as an antiseptic in medicines.  Due to its various therapeutic qualities, health practitioners and surgeons referred to it as Australia's natural wonder and 'cure-all oil.'

Eucalyptus Tree Cultivation and Essential Oil Distillation

In present times, Eucalyptus tree cultivation has been spread all over the world, including India, China, Brazil, and Europe. There are 700 varieties and almost 500 of them are fit for the extraction of essential oil. However, Eucalyptus essential oil is mostly extracted from it's globulus species, famously known as "Blue Gum.”Almost all varieties of Eucalyptus trees have a crisp, fresh, and camphoraceous scent.

For it's extraction, the leaves of the Eucalyptus tree are first dried. Then the leaves are manually crushed with wooden mortar and pestleinto powder form. The powdered leaves are then added into the distillation apparatus with water for steam distillation at 100°C temperature. The water vapors formed during the heating process carry vaporized compounds to the condensation flask. In the condensation process, the vaporized compounds cool down, allowing water and oil to separate.

I have recently returned to the use of essential oils in an attempt to cure my house, pets and myself. Eucalyptus was one of the first oils I fell in love with. All essential oils seem to have such an array of curative properties that it’s easy to start with just one to discover all the ways in which it can be used effectively. I have 7 cats and I take my responsibility for their health and happiness very seriously so all choices have considered the fact this is their home too. It’s easy to assume our pets are going to tolerate all the same things as humans. Here is the very simple rule I always try to follow: find out independently, as a whole, what can and cannot hurt them. I had been very surprised to learn cats can’t tolerate citrus and lemon is like poison to them. I’d been using lemon cleaners forever! Anything proven to be harmful to them I will not ever apply directly. However I will use those oils in mixtures for myself or cleaning. The broad stroke oils some say are harmful I will mix into other recipes in very small amounts of 1 or 2 drops once or twice a week. They can use lye and sulfur but not eucalyptus? Really? My recipes have been working wonderfully. I do think about all the pets out there living in essential oil homes and I read a lot of comments and questions about homemade remedies vs pharmaceutical remedies and advice. Start simple, start slow, be observant and remember natural will always be a better more versatile choice.
