Wintergreen oil is the primary ingredient in most topical pain reliever cream. That invigorating and fresh scent is unmistakable, and most people find fast relief with these muscle creams. Whenever you see the words mentholated on the ingredients list, that’s sure to be referring to wintergreen.

As an invigorating, aromatic essential oil, wintergreen works to uplift your physical and mental senses. It's a mental stimulant that works to increase awareness and enhance attention. It improves blood circulation while elevating mood.

A Long History of Healing

Wintergreen has a long history of healing usage in the United States. Native American Indians used wintergreen leaves—the same part of the plant that is used to extract wintergreen essential oil—to treat respiratory infections and ailments. The Indians also chewed on the leaves to stimulate their mind and body for the long day of hunting ahead. It was believed that the wintergreen increased endurance and stamina, as well as heightened the mental acuity and reflex actions that would be necessary to sense danger and move swiftly. Finally, Native Americans boiled the leaves in water to infuse the essence of the wintergreen into a drinkable tea. The tea would be used by the medicine man in the tribe to give to patients to drink, as well as to apply topically to sore bodies home from the hunt.

Using Wintergreen Essential Oil at Home

Wintergreen essential oil is very concentrated, and it’s inadvisable to ingest directly. When you purchase wintergreen essential oil or any essential oil, be sure to only buy oil that is 100% pure, natural, and therapeutic grade, with no additives or dilution. That's the only way to guarantee that you're getting the level of purity and concentration that ensures you get the most benefits. There are a variety of ways that you can benefit from the use of wintergreen essential oil using these DIY recipes in your own home.

Wintergreen has anti-bacterial properties that make it appropriate for oral cleansing. This homemade toothpaste will fight oral bacteria as well as leave your teeth and mouth sparkling fresh and minty.

In a clean jar, mix up 2/3 cup baking soda with 1 tsp. sea salt and 1 tsp. honey (omit honey if desired). Add 1 tsp. wintergreen essential oil and stir vigorously. Add drops of filtered water if desired until the ideal consistency is achieved. Use as you normally would.

Mouth Rinse

For an instant pick-me-up and fresh, minty breath, make this homemade mouth rinse with wintergreen essential oil.

Fill a sterilized Mason jar with distilled water. Add 2 teaspoons of baking soda and 4 drops of wintergreen essential oil. Shake thoroughly before each use. Use as a regular mouth rinse as often as desired, but do not swallow.

Respiratory Relief Against Congestion

If you are suffering from the common cold and finding it difficult to breathe freely, wintergreen essential oil can help.

In a small jar, mix up 3 tablespoons of plain petroleum jelly with 2 teaspoons of wintergreen essential oil. Stir to combine. Rub on the chest area and beneath the nostrils, being careful not to get it on lips or in eyes. The aromatic scent of the wintergreen will help to open nasal passages almost immediately, and the penetrating jelly on the chest may help to move fluids that have caused congestion.

Wintergreen essential oil is also ideal for home crafts around the holidays. Imagine walking into your home in the middle of a cold, dark winter, only to be greeted with the fresh, lovely scent of wintergreen. Put a few dropper fulls of wintergreen in a spray bottle with some regular tap water. Spritz on holiday pinecones, on door wreaths, on your Christmas tree, and even on light bulbs. When you or your family turn on the lights, the smell of fresh wintergreen will dissipate throughout your home.
