7 Beauty Benefits of Tea Tree Oil

May 31, 2016 0 Comments

Tea tree oil offers multiple health and beauty benefits. This essential oil, yellowish in color, is extracted from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia plant and has been used in Australia for centuries as a remedy for cold sores, nail fungus, and even as an antiseptic to treat wounds and prevent infections.

Every home can use tea tree oil and we've put together a list of the seven benefits of tea tree oil offers for skin, hair, and nails.

Tea Tree Oil

1. Acne Treatment

The antiseptic properties offered by tea tree oil can be an effective treatment for acne. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a clinical trial compared an application of five-percent tea tree oil gel to a five-percent benzoyl peroxide product to treat acne. The trial found that while the benzoyl peroxide worked slightly better, the non-toxic tea tree oil had fewer side effects for the trial participants.

2. Non-drying Make-up Remover

While make-up wipes are convenient, many commercial brands contain ingredients that irritate and dry your skin.  Tea tree oil has zero alcohol or sulfates, two common ingredients known to leech moisture from your skin and contribute to lines and wrinkles. Natural tea tree oil also is free from phthalates, triclosan, parabens, pesticides, GMOs, or synthetic fragrances and dyes.

3. Softens Dry Cuticles

Keep your cuticles supple and soft by applying tea tree oil. Say goodbye to dry cuticles that crack and bleed! Combine your tea tree essential oil (about 10 drops) with 10 drops lavender essential oil, and one tablespoon each avocado and jojoba oils. Store the solution in a dark-colored glass bottle, shaking well before each use. Use it to soften cuticles and prevent nails from cracking and splitting.

4. Treat Split Ends

Split ends can make even the best cut look raggedy and messy. Apply a drop of tea tree oil directly to your hair's tips as a moisturizing method for treating and preventing split ends.

5. Condition an Irritated Scalp

Shampoos, conditioners, gels, pomades, and other products as well as heat styling can steal the moisture from your hair and scalp. Styling products containing alcohol and sulfates are the worst offenders. Condition and soothe an irritated, dry scalp with natural tea tree oil. The anti-fungal properties of tea tree oil also help fight dandruff and even work to unplug pores.

6. Soothe Burns

Even the most practiced hands slip when using a flat or curling iron. Turn to your tea tree essential oil to soothe that minor burn. Always gently wash the affected area first with cold water before applying any type of treatment. Mix your tea tree oil with a little aloe vera gel and lightly apply to the burn.

Remember, if the burn begins to blister or is painful, immediately contact a medical professional and seek professional treatment.

7. Heals Razor Irritation and Cuts

Razor bumps, burns, and cuts are irritating and unfortunately something that happens to anyone who shaves. Try dabbing a small amount of tea tree oil with a cotton pad or ball directly onto the affected area. It should soothe the irritation and help heal the skin.
