The amazing versatility of bergamot oil has made it a favorite among essential oil users. It is one of the most commonly used ingredients in some of the most expensive perfumes and cosmetics in the world. Individuals who have discovered the joys of using essential oils for homemade soaps, lotions and cleaning solutions, rely on the essential oil bergamot to lend a satisfying fragrance and function to their DIY products. You, too can enjoy the amazing versatility of bergamot oil.

The Origin and Source of Bergamot Essential Oil

Bergamot essential oil originates in Southeast Asia, and is grown for commercial export along the Ivory Coast. It grows naturally in abundance in Calabria, Italy, where the short tree, citrus bergamia, bears a citrusy round fruit, once in the spring and once again just before winter. About the size of a small orange, the fruit bears a striking resemblance to a lemon. Interestingly, the bergamot tree is actually the result of breeders crossing an orange tree with a lemon tree. The essential oil is extracted via cold-press from the peel of the fruit, resulting in a yellowish, green oil. Because of its citrusy, orange fragrance, bergamot is popular with perfume chemists, who blend it with other essential oils to scent approximately a third of the world’s perfumes and colognes.

Characteristics of Bergamot Essential Oil

The fragrance of bergamot essential oil can be described as fruity and citrusy, with a deeper essence of sweets floral notes. Combined with certain other essential oils, such as cedarwood, it produces a masculine scent. However, when blended with some other essential oils, such as lavender, the resulting fragrance is distinctly feminine.

Bergamot essential oil is used frequently for aromatherapy, where practitioners rely on it for its revitalizing, positive and rejuvenating characteristics.

The chemical makeup of bergamot includes: a-pinene, limonenemyrcene, linalool, nerol, linalyl acetate, geraniol, and a-terpineol. These components help to also make bergamot essential oil useful as an anti-bacterial, pest-repellent, and analgesic agent.
